STOP SPEEDING LUCYS LAW

STOP SPEEDING LUCYS LAW
The Issue
I am reaching out in request to get signage placed on Oakfield Ave in Wantagh NY. I have lived on Oakfield Ave in Wantagh NY since 2017. Many people speed down this block with no regards to the children, people and animals in the neighborhood. Many people in this neighborhood walk with their children and/or pets as well as run/exercise over the overpass which leads to a very popular park Forest City Community Park.
In October 2023 my puppy Lucy was killed by a speeding commercial vehicle. This was a traumatic event for my family as well as my local community. There is an unbelievable amount of road kill in our area as a result to the speeding vehicles. I am not the only person in the neighborhood that fears for my child’s life.
I am requesting a cross walk with a yield to pedestrian sign or a STOP sign with a cross walk be put at the corner of Ravine Place and Oakfield Ave and at the corner of Barrier Ave and Oakfield Ave. I have been informed that cross walks with yield to pedestrian signs mandate a crossing guard and must be closer to a school but that NEEDS TO BE CHANGED! I have also been informed that a STOP sign “defines the right of way.” The areas I mentioned above could qualify for that and the stop signs would significantly help the need for speed reduction on Oakfield. I am also requesting a speed radar with display be placed at the overpass before the southern state parkway, but I have been informed that these speed radars came from “a grant from a long time ago that is now all used up.” Loring Ave in Levittown recently got a speed radar so I truly believe if we work together we can find a way to get one placed in our neighborhood as well.
We live in an area with a schools nearby with a speed limit of 30mph and it is not enforced. This should not all fall on the police. They cannot sit on our block and monitor 24 hours 7 days a week. When talking to local community members many of them told me they are fearful of crossing Oakfield. They have to walk to the top of the overpass and cross because at least the can get a view of the cars coming. I am not the only persons whose dog has been struck by a speeding vehicle on this street. We live in a community which we want to feel safe in and we are asking for help.
