Stop Snapperfest: Turtle Snapping

(The text below -between quotation marks- is a direct quote from Matthew Smith's petition "Stop Snapperfest" http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-snapperfest
Matthew Smith's campaign didn't get the signatures required a few months ago, but we can't forsake this! This "custom" takes place every year, and it must be stopped.)

" A cruel event is scheduled where snapping turtles will be SLAMMED TO THE GROUND, swung around repeatedly, and have their heads yanked from their shells.

Ohio County, Indiana, is home to an extraordinarily cruel event called "Snapperfest"—next scheduled for this Saturday, August 20! Every year at the Campshore Campground, wild-caught snapping turtles endure terrible violence at the hands of participants. The frightened animals are grabbed by their tails and repeatedly slammed to the ground. Their heads are yanked from their shells, and they are then swung around until "contestants" are able to wrap their fists around the animals' necks.

Prohibits torture and mutilation of vertebrate animals, which turtles are. Some people keep them as pets.

Ohio County, Indiana, is only showing itself of its delight in barbarity with its extraordinarily cruel event called "Snapperfest"—next scheduled for this Saturday, August 20!

I feel it seriously disturbing how your County derives its entertainment. News of this is spreading across the nation-as a shameful spectacle.

Exposing society, especially children and young people to animal cruelty leads to antisocial and deviant behavior. (Keep in mind this is a campground-exposing children to this barbarity constitutes child abuse, i.e., mental abuse-torturing and killing animals in front of them.)

http://www.jaapl.org/cgi/reprint/30/2/257.pdf

"A history of animal cruelty during childhood was significantly associated with APD, antisocial personality traits, and polysubstance abuse. Mental retardation, psychotic disorders, and alcohol abuse showed no such association.," J Am Acad Psychiatry Law 30:257–65, 2002

I quote: National Institute of Health
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2792040/

"Cruelty to animals is associated with elevated rates observed in young, poor, men with family histories of antisocial behavior and personal histories of conduct disorder in childhood, and antisocial, obsessive-compulsive and histrionic personality disorders, and pathological gambling in adulthood. Given these associations, and the widespread ownership of pets and animals, effective screening of children, adolescents and adults for animal cruelty and appropriate mental health interventions should be deployed."

Also criminologist note that virtually every serial killer begun their "training" by killing animals because it was *entertaining*.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

In short, this is a sad testiment of the creature called man--still a savage. It is very heart breaking to know just how cruel people are and the length of their savagry and barbarity - inflicting pain and suffering on an innocent creature whose only crime was to be born - people know what they are doing. Why is there no shame in this? "
(Matthew Smith's original petition).

There is no other way to see this than absolute cruelty. I signed this petition back then and I was devastated to know it didn't reach the required number of signatures (18 thousand). It makes me sick knowing this abominable event occurred and we didn't have enough signatures to do something about it, but I'm pinning my hopes on this new petition to stop Snapperfest for good. Since I live in Uruguay (Southamerica) the little I can do for these turtles is "renewing" this petition. Please help, because this barbaric custom has to end!

Thanks for your support for animal rights,

Josefina Insua

I'm signing this petition in order to stand for animal rights. By signing this petition, I demand that all kinds of cruelty towards turtles at the Ohio County Snapperfest become illegal. This campaign follows Matthew Smith's petition last August to stop Snapperfest and protect turtles from further abuse. I claim Ohio Government to take actions, considering as well the fact that even little children attend to this barbaric event, promoting animal cruelty.

Sincerely,
