We are writing to you to bring your attention to the mass dog killings that are currently happening in Jordan. It is a heartbreaking situation that we cannot ignore, and we need your help to spread awareness and put a stop to it.

Reports have shown that peaceful dogs that have been living in local neighborhoods for years are being shot, poisoned, lynched, and burned alive by local vigilantes. These are cruel and unnecessary acts that have caused immense distress to many dog lovers around the world. The media and news broadcasting agencies are creating mass hysteria and inciting violence daily, which is only making the situation worse.

Local government and municipalities are now choosing to get involved by shooting or collecting dogs. Videos and pictures have shown that dogs are also being forced into cages, packed in like sardines, awaiting their fate of being killed. People have reported hearing the agonizing howls of dogs at night as they bleed out from the bullet wounds that pierced their flesh just moments after the municipalities arrived. Dogs have been found lying in their own saliva and urine, half eaten pieces of poisoned food lingering near their lifeless bodies. These are inhumane and cruel acts that needs to be addressed immediately. 

A society void of compassion for its animals is a society in crisis. This is a moral issue as generations of people have internalized this misinformed hatred towards dogs. Youth are growing up with absolute apathy for living creatures other than humans and are even being encouraged to take part in the violence against stray dogs. Exposing children to such violence is a form of child abuse and endangerment and only perpetuates the negative misconceptions people harbor towards these strays, ensuring that the cycle of violence persists. 

Sadly, these events will not make news headlines, but just like outrage was displayed for the animals being displaced due to the Russian war in Ukraine, as well as horror of the Asia meat trade, the world and all animal lovers need to be aware of what is happening in the Middle East.

We urge you to join us in standing in solidarity with Canaan Dog Alliance and other local Jordanian rescues to condemn the actions of those who hurt dogs. We need your voice to let the Jordanian citizens know that we will not tolerate such acts of violence and cruelty towards animals. 

We also call on the Jordanian government to take immediate action to stop these killings and to find more humane solutions to deal with the stray dog population. There are other solutions available that do not involve violence and cruelty towards animals, such as spay and neuter programs and animal shelters.
