The Issue

Despite 75% of respondents AGAINST short-term rentals, the Madison City Council has decided to allow STRs to operate across ALL non-HOA neighborhoods. They’ll vote June 22. Ask the council to put reasonable restrictions to stop short-term rental investors from buying up Madison's neighborhoods and keep Madison’s homes for families.

  1. Short-term rentals raise the cost of housing, rent and property taxes for everybody by reducing housing supply. Even those with homes pay more from rising costs
  2. Short-term rentals destroy local communities. They make Madison a less stable, less connected, and more transient community.
  3. Short-term rentals could allow unsafe individuals to rent and live near our children and schools with little to no oversight or transparency
  4. Short-term rentals can often sit vacant, increasing chances of blight, crime and wasting homes in our neighborhoods
  5. Short-term rentals can conversely reduce home values directly adjacent to them

Cities like Huntsville, Decatur, Tuscaloosa, Nashville, Asheville and more recognize the harm that monetizing our residential neighborhoods with STRs does to a community and have put reasonable restrictions in place to protect full-time residents, like banning non-owner-occupied STRs from neighborhoods.

We should all know that our neighbors are trusted members of the Madison community. Our kids deserve to play in safe, stable neighborhoods, to ride their bikes, wait for the bus, and walk to school in a neighborhood where residents are familiar faces—families who live, work, and contribute to this community. They deserve to live next to friends who they'll grow up with, learn from and form bonds with. We should know who our neighbors are, and trust that they are good community members, particularly where our children play and walk to school. Our homes should be owned by people here in Madison, not investors driven by profiting off of our community.

Huntsville already has done this successfully.

Ask the Madison City Council to ban short-term rentals within residential zones. Don't allow investors to profit off of buying up our neighborhoods. Our community's future is at stake.

Sign this petition to call on our leaders to prioritize those of us who live here in Madison over short-term rental investors.
