Just yesterday, Monday, May 11, the Obama administration gave conditional approval to allow Shell to start drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean’s Chukchi Sea off the Alaskan coast this summer. This is a major blow to our efforts to protect the Arctic Ocean and its majestic wildlife from deadly oil spills. Together with Oceana, I remain dedicated to protecting the Arctic Ocean. Now, more than ever, it is of vital importance that our petition for the BSEE to deny Shell’s request for more time to drill. The government may have just come even closer to unleashing Shell upon the Arctic, but our petition could help force them out of much important Arctic Ocean habitat sooner rather than later.
