Stop Sexist Curriculum in LCV

The Issue

UPDATE: This morning I had a brief opportunity to talk with my Principal. I was able to provide context for this petition. I love my school and admire my LCV teacher’s enthusiasm and genuine love she has for her students. The purpose of this petition was to provoke serious action and conversation about the sexist aspects of the curriculum that can be altered in order to be empowering. We need to prioritize upholding our motto of creating “women of good heart and right conscience.” I feel confident that our Principal and administration will be addressing our concerns. I know they have the students' best interests in mind.  I want to thank my Principal and school for being open-minded to the voices of current students, alumnae and beyond. I want to thank those who signed and those who left such inspiring and beautiful comments. This is a collective effort, I just happened to write down the thoughts that so many have had for years. If I have learned anything from this experience, it is to always stand up for what you believe in. I honestly was expecting maybe 50 supporters, but over 1000 that is absolutely incredible!

ORIGINAL MESSAGE: Our school has a class entitled, "Love, Choices, and Vocations." In it, girls are taught how to be self-actualized, closer to God, etc. However, girls are also taught that "if [they] want respect, [they should] dress the part." Girls are instructed that sexual activity is indicative of poor character, that respectable girls should not engage in sexual activity, and that dressing "immodestly" is unfair to men since they cannot control themselves. Clearly, these lessons are extremely problematic for both sexes, because they promote victim blaming, slut shaming, and clear-cut sexism. We would really appreciate if you would sign this petition if you have ever felt disempowered or offended by any aspect of the LCV class. Our school strives to create "women of good heart and right conscience," but the oppressive characteristics of LCV are the antithesis of this goal. We love our school. Let's make it better!
