​Every year, water bill payers across the country hand over hard-earned money to water companies for safe, effective wastewater treatment. Yet, untreated sewage continues to be pumped directly into our local seas, rivers, and coastal areas nationwide.

​Our waters are regularly polluted, posing direct health risks to families, swimmers, and coastal visitors. What makes this failure even more outrageous is that these sewage discharges are happening even during dry weather and official drought conditions. For example, Southern Water discharged waste into our local sea on 19th August during a dry period. Storm overflows are supposed to be emergency measures for severe storms, yet water companies are routinely bypassing treatment during dry periods when rivers and seas are at their most vulnerable.

​In the UK rail sector, passengers receive automatic compensation when a service fails through "Delay Repay." Water consumers deserve a similar "Spill Repay" scheme: if a water company fails to treat waste and dumps untreated sewage into our waters, customers should receive an automatic refund or credit on their bills.

​We are calling on Ofwat, the Government, and all UK water companies to establish a mandatory "Spill Repay" scheme for water customers nationwide. We demand:

​Automatic "Spill Repay" Credits: A compulsory refund on customer bills for every spill event that pollutes local recreational waters and coastlines.
​Zero Tolerance for Dry-Weather Dumping: Strict regulatory enforcement and heavy penalties for illegal "dry spills" during periods without heavy rain.
​No Executive Bonuses for Failure: An immediate halt to executive bonuses and shareholder dividend payouts until environmental standards are consistently met.
