Stop Service Ontario From Suspending Drivers Licenses for Minor Fines

The Issue

As someone personally affected by Service Ontario's policy of suspending driver's licenses for minor fines, I've seen firsthand how this approach is causing undue hardship. The weight of these penalties falls disproportionately on Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders, amidst an already challenging context of high unemployment.

When licenses are suspended for minor violations, it adds another layer of financial burdens on drivers who are forced to pay reinstatement fees. The real catch is that many of these drivers are either unemployed or underemployed, making it extremely difficult for them to cough up these additional costs.

This policy is a glaring perpetuation of a financial vicious cycle, especially for CDL drivers. According to the Ontario Trucking Association, there were approximately 200,000 truck drivers in Ontario as of 2018. This means a substantial segment of our population is vulnerable to this unjust policy.

We believe in a fair system where penalties are proportional to the infraction, and where one's livelihood isn't jeopardized over minor fines. It's time Service Ontario reevaluates its policies and take into account the livelihoods and realities of drivers trying to keep afloat.

Every voice matters, every signature is a step towards making this necessary change. We urge you to sign this petition and stand with us in calling for a review of Service Ontario’s punitive suspension and re-instatement policies.
