Stop Scheduling Exams on Saturdays For CUEA Students

The Issue

For a while now, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) has been conducting exams on Saturdays, disregarding the fact that Saturdays for a substantial number of students is a holy day of worship.

The attempts to stop this violation through the Students' Governing Council have been disregarded. This matter requires immediate attention to uphold equality and the constitutional right to worship in pursuant to Article 32 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

As students practicing seventh day adventism, we are in church on Saturdays. Any exams held on Sabbath practically excludes us from participating meaning that we are disenfranchised and excluded from fairly competing with fellow students including applying the taught skills and knowledge which may have important and far reaching ramifications on our transcripts and overall performance. Sign this petition in solidarity with students who are not only aggrieved but disenfranchised as a result of missing exams due to the scheduling conflict.

This petition therefore demands:

1. That the Dean Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) and the University Administration reschedule exams from Saturday's to an alternate day within the week so as to accommodate students of the Seventh Day Adventist faith.

2. That Commission For University Education ensure that Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is compliant to statutory and regulatory demands of the Universities Act, 2012. That CUEA adheres to guidelines of inclusivity which negate discrimination of students on the basis of religion and/or faith.

Sign this petition in solidarity with students who are not only aggrieved but disenfranchised as a result of missing exams due to the scheduling conflict.
