Summary of SB484 as introduced:
Requires that, as a component of informed consent to an abortion, to determine gestation age, every pregnant female shall undergo ultrasound imaging and be given an opportunity to view the ultrasound image of her fetus prior to the abortion. The medical professional performing the ultrasound must obtain written certification from the woman that the opportunity was offered and whether the woman availed herself of the opportunity to see the ultrasound image or hear the fetal heartbeat. A copy of the ultrasound and the written certification shall be maintained in the woman's medical records at the facility where the abortion is to be performed.
This is an unnecessary state mandate that plans to lower abortion rates through, basically, guilt tripping women who have already made the tough decision to have an abortion. This is none of the government's business and is an invasion of the privacy. Women should not be mandated to look at an ultrasound if they don't want to, nor should they have a paper permanently put into their medical record because they refuse to look.
Who is going to pay for these extra ultrasounds? Insurance companies won't want to pay extra money, the people don't want to be taxed to raise money for these ultrasounds by the state, and requiring the individual to pay would impede some women's right to an abortion (for example, if they can't afford to pay).
Sign and this petition will be sent to the Governor of Virginia, who has already agreed to sign this bill into law if it passes through the conservative House in Virginia.
The mandated ultrasounds that will be performed on women are trans- vaginal ultrasounds. How a trans-vaginal ultrasound is performed: You will lie down on a table with your knees bent and feet in holders called stirrups. The health care provider will place a probe, called a transducer, into the vagina. The probe is covered with a condom and a gel. The probe sends out sound waves, which reflect off body structures. A computer receives these waves and uses them to create a picture. The doctor can immediately see the picture on a nearby TV monitor. (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003779.htm)
So now not only is it mandatory to have an ultrasound, but it's mandatory to be penetrated vaginally by a probe in order to have this ultrasound.
