STOP SANRAL FROM PROFITEERING FROM A NATURAL DISASTER
The Issue
The KwaZulu Natal (KZN) North Coast, from Umhlanga through to Blythedale, has been severely impacted by the recent and well-publicised floods - while these floods have impacted communities across KZN, killing nearly 450 people, destroying homes, businesses and livelihoods, one state-owned enterprise has been making "hay while the sun shines" and profiteering off of communities who have already gone through what has already been an unbearable set of circumstances. Due to damaged sections on alternative roads and routes (the R102 and the M4) between Umhlanga and KwaDukuza, all road users commuting to the north of the province are being forced through the N2 and two of SANRAL toll gates - the Tongaat Toll Gate and the Umvoti Toll Gate.
The problem with this is not just that SANRAL now "owns" all vehicle movements between Umhlanga and the northern coast regions (with no alternatives for motorists they are no doubt clocking up huge profits in the process). The biggest problem is that SANRAL's greed is placing an immense additional burden on an already constrained road infrastructure - traffic in and out of the North Coast comes to grinding halt at these toll gates. There are motorists who now do what is supposed to be a 30 - 40 minute commute in no less than three hours - both ways.
The communities in the affected areas have been assured by local councilors (in the very non-specific way only they can muster) that there are discussions underway, but to date it appears as if SANRAL will not even be drawn into commenting about what is clearly a crisis. Why would it when it is coining it big time from people who are desperate to get to their homes and places of work? Add to this the cost of sitting in traffic, getting home to houses without water and, in many instances, power, the actions of SANRAL are callous at best and downright despicable at worst.
