We need your help to protect the bears living in the Pisgah, Panthertown-Bonas Defeat, and Standing Indian Bear Sanctuaries.
This Thursday, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) will vote on whether or not to open up hunting in 3 designated bear sanctuaries. These sanctuaries have been bear safe havens for over 50 years. If the NCWRC approves the proposal (G-13 -Bears), it will open up the three bear sanctuaries to trophy hunters and hunting with dogs.
The NCWRC's basis for this proposal is to address bear-human conflicts, and it is important to note that hunting DOES NOT reduce bear-human conflicts.
It's counterintuitive to allow hunting in bear sanctuaries that were established to protect bears and their critical habitat. Allowing hunting dogs to enter these sanctuaries will displace wildlife, including bears pushing them out of the sanctuaries and into residential areas creating more alleged conflicts. This proposal does not address the underlying cause, which is human behavior.

You can give feedback even if you are not an NC resident. If you visit NC or have family that lives there, be sure to mention it to the commissioners.

Time is of the essence. Every voice, email, and signature counts. This is our last chance to keep the bears living in the three sanctuaries safe. Together we can stop this.
