Stop RUKH 200 + unit Development from altering Moosic and Montage Mountain
The Issue
The Greater Moosic area is more than just a place on the map; it's where I grew up, played, and now raise my own family. It's a community defined by its natural beauty, peaceful neighborhoods, and a tightly-knit sense of security and belonging. These qualities have drawn families and individuals here for generations, marking it as a cherished enclave within the bustling regions of Northeast Pennsylvania.
Recently, however, our community has come under threat. RUKH Development, LLC has introduced a proposal that stands to drastically alter the character and infrastructure of the Greater Moosic area. Their plan entails constructing approximately 210 apartments and 30 (which is unclear by the developer if it will be low income) townhouses within the Glenmaura Corporate Center. This proposed development is seeking not only to shift the residential to commercial balance dramatically but also to bypass essential zoning ordinances by requesting relief on parking requirements, increasing impervious surface coverage, and allowing buildings to exceed current height restrictions.
This is not just a localized concern confined to nearby residents alone. The repercussions of such large-scale development will reverberate throughout the entire Moosic, Old Forge, and Taylor area. The increased population density threatens to strain local amenities, burden our infrastructure, and disrupt the serene quality of life we have worked so hard to preserve.
While development is a sign of economic growth, it must be managed responsibly and sustainably. The environmental impact is significant; more impervious surfaces mean increased runoff and potential flooding risks, which could impact the local ecosystem. Furthermore, reduced parking could lead to congestion and restricted access in times of emergency, endangering residents.
According to a study by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), increasing impervious surfaces contributes to urban heat islands, affecting local climates adversely. Imagine the Moosic and Montage Mountain, once a haven of tranquility, transformed into a crowded, overdeveloped space struggling to meet the needs of its residents.
What we are asking for is not unreasonable. We want the local developers and authorities to consider the long-term impacts and explore alternatives that will support both growth and the integrity of our beloved community. Public hearings must be held to ensure that the voices of those directly affected are heard before any decisions are made. This is a crucial opportunity to engage in dialogue that preserves the delicate balance between development and the environment.
Join me in preserving the distinctive fabric of the Greater Moosic area and Montage Mountain. Sign this petition to urge local government officials to uphold the current zoning regulations and deny RUKH Development, LLC the permissions they seek. Together, we can protect our home for our families and future generations, maintaining the charm and livability of our beautiful slice of NEPA.
