We are tired of witnessing innocent animals be abused for entertainment in Albany, NY, and it is time that the call of all major animal welfare organizations in the United States be heeded . New York's very own ASPCA condemns rodeo. Why? Because rodeo events are a misuse and abuse of terrified prey animals who did not choose to engage in these activities, and are shocked, prodded, strapped and pushed into compliance for the sake of human entertainment.  Rodeo is also one of the most dangerous sports to humans, both riders and spectators, and the cause of major new lawsuits from severely injured or crippled audience members.

Rodeos involve a range of events that indiscriminately subject animals like bulls, horses, and calves to stress, discomfort, and pain. These animals are not willing participants; they are coerced and manipulated into performing dangerous stunts. The use of devices like electric prods, flank straps, and spurs cause physical harm and immense psychological distress to these gentle creatures, turning entertainment into a horrific ordeal for them.

Several reports and studies have shown that rodeo animals frequently suffer injuries, with some incidents leading to fatal outcomes. Just his past spring, a bull in Arkansas lost his life due to injuries that were so severe.   Veterinarian-based reports highlight the significant risk of injury or even death that rodeo animals face, whether through the stress-induced conditions or the physical harm from the events themselves. 

Beyond the individual cases of suffering, this is a broader ethical issue. By allowing such events to continue, we are endorsing a culture that normalizes teasing as entertainment, along with violence and a disregard for life. In a time when animal rights are gaining much-deserved attention globally, it is paramount for communities like Albany to reflect these values by prohibiting rodeo events.

There are viable alternatives to such cruel displays. Community gatherings can embrace humane and animal-friendly activities that celebrate local traditions without the need for exploitation.
