Recently, I discovered that Roblox has implemented an AI age verification system. This change has impacted many, including myself. Even though I'm well over the age limit, the system has mistakenly flagged my account, resulting in restrictions on my privileges, particularly my ability to communicate freely on the platform. It's not just frustrating; it feels unfair to lose such an integral part of the Roblox experience due to an error-prone automated system.

Roblox is a virtual gathering space for millions of users, fostering creativity, community, and collaboration. It hosts users of all ages, especially many teenagers who gather to play, learn, and socialize. However, with the introduction of AI age verification, countless users face the risk of unjust restrictions due to false age determinations. The AI system can be inaccurate and might not adequately account for the diversity and nuance of human appearance or identity, thus affecting many valid users negatively.

Although age verification is essential to ensure a safe environment online, relying solely on AI to manage this crucial task is problematic. AI technology has its limitations, and errors can lead to unfair access issues, violating user rights and trust. Not every young user will have the same appearance or documentation abilities, leading to undue exclusion of genuine players.

Instead, Roblox should consider combining AI tools with human oversight to enhance accuracy and fairness. Implementing a robust appeals process, where users can submit additional information or documents reviewed by a human, can help correct these mistakes. Encouraging community feedback on this new system, actively listening, and making amendments based on real user experiences will go a long way in retaining user trust.

We ask the Roblox team to prioritize user experience and ensure fairness by halting the current AI age verification and revising its approach. By doing so, they can create a more inclusive and equitable community where players from Sydney, NSW, Australia, and beyond are assured their access won't be wrongfully revoked.
