Stop RN Layoffs in Ontario – Protect Ontario Nurses and Patient Safety
Our Healthcare System Needs Nurses, Not Layoffs
We are calling on the Government of Ontario, the Ministry of Health, and hospital administrations across the province to stop unnecessary Registered Nurse (RN) layoffs and protect the future of patient care.
Ontario’s healthcare system is already facing significant challenges. Patients need timely access to care, hospitals are under pressure, and healthcare professionals are working hard to meet increasing demands.
Yet Registered Nurses are facing layoffs and the elimination of essential nursing positions.
This is deeply concerning.
Registered Nurses are not simply employees. They are essential members of the healthcare team who assess patients, administer medications, recognize clinical deterioration, respond to emergencies, coordinate care, and advocate for patient safety.
When experienced RNs lose their jobs, Ontario risks losing valuable clinical knowledge, experience, and dedication.
Reducing RN positions does not eliminate the need for nursing care. Patients will continue to require assessment, treatment, monitoring, and support.
The question is: who will provide that care?
We believe that protecting nursing positions is an investment in patient safety, healthcare quality, and the future of Ontario.
We Demand:
1. An immediate halt to unnecessary RN layoffs across Ontario’s publicly funded hospitals.
2. A transparent review of hospital staffing decisions and their impact on patient safety.
3. Protection of experienced Registered Nurses and their essential clinical roles.
4. Meaningful consultation with frontline nurses and their representatives before nursing positions are eliminated.
5. Safe staffing levels that reflect patient acuity, complexity, and clinical needs.
6. A provincial strategy to retain experienced nurses and strengthen Ontario’s healthcare workforce.
Why This Matters
Every RN position represents experience, knowledge, and the ability to provide safe patient care.
Nurses dedicate their lives to caring for others. They deserve a healthcare system that values their contribution rather than treating their positions as expendable.
Patients deserve access to safe, timely, and compassionate care.
Ontario cannot afford to lose experienced nurses while patients continue to need them.
Request for Action
We request the Government of Ontario, the Ministry of Health, and hospital leaders to take immediate action to prevent RN layoffs, protect frontline nursing positions, protect patients and protect our citizens.
If you believe that nurses matter, that patient safety matters, and that Ontario’s healthcare system deserves better, please sign and share this petition.
Let us stand together.
Protect our nurses. Protect our patients, Protect our Communities, Protect our citizens, Protect Ontario’s healthcare system. Nurses are frontline fighters for our safety. World recovered from COVID pandemic through the dedication of our nurses. They are not only workers, they are our protectors also.
