The issue
At the present time i have a fine totaling more than $2000 over a very simple error that im sure most of us are unaware of. I have had a govia account for a good number of years now that was always connected to my husbands credit card. Last year i bought a new car and thought i was doing the correct procedure when i took my transponder tag out of my old car and placing it in my new car. Each time i went through the toll it always recognized the tag and beeped as i passed through so i thought nothing of it. I never received any bills or notifications that there was a problem with my account. Then when i moved houses i went to qld transport and updated my address, over the next few months bill after bill started arriving from govia, sper and the government. Each bill had a photo of my car and a bill of $219 for a $1.61 toll. They claim it was toll evasion. Apparently i was supposed to ring them up immediately and let them know i changed cars, failure to do this has resulted in 11 x $219 bills to date. I have spoken to numerous go via staff and the supervisor was ridiculously rude to me and demanded that its in the fineprint and i must pay immediately, each bill has an admin fee of $29 plus more fees from the government, then a $69 fee from SPER. Problem is i never received these bills a year ago which is why i never realized my tag wasn't connected. To date my govia account is $30 in credit. As a mother of 3 i certainly cant afford this type of fine especially over a simple communication error with govia to their clients. Upon calling the Tolling offense unit i spoke to a staff member from the tolling offence unit who basically laughed at me and said i can either pay the bill or take them to court which of course i cant afford. He claimed there is no ombudsman for tolling as they are government owned but then i found the TCO which states there is an ombudsman. i have emailed both and waiting on a reply. Until then i need to spread the word that this isn't ok. Since looking into this i found many other cases just like mine and i have realised people need to stand up and demand to know why these fees are so massive, especially as the road has already been paid off! When you dig deeper it seems we are all paying a few taxes covering this road and the extra fees are just add insult to injury. Please help me in making my voice heard. Who knows it may be you receiving these fines one day
