The skies over Skydive Vancouver are more than just a breathtaking canvas for our adventures; they are a shared space where the environment, our community, and our passion for skydiving converge. That's why I'm deeply concerned about the proposed rezoning for Pacific Coast Renewables, a facility currently besieged by issues of odour, an influx of birds, and turbulence caused by their infrastructure. Right now, they are seeking permission to expand and install an anaerobic digester with a smokestack to burn off excess gases, exacerbating the existing problems.

The decision to potentially allow the expansion of Pacific Coast Renewables threatens not only the environmental quality but also the safety and enjoyment of skydivers. The increased bird activity, turbulence, and odours are already making the skies less hospitable. Adding more industrial activity and a smokestack would undermine the tranquility and safety that are hallmarks of skydiving in this region. Studies have shown that increased industrial activities in sensitive areas lead to disruptions in wildlife patterns, affecting both local biodiversity and the community's interaction with nature.

Furthermore, there are concerns about the impact on local air quality. The introduction of a smokestack could affect nearby residential areas, potentially increasing health risks from air pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has frequently warned about the health impacts of particulate matter and other pollutants released during industrial processes. Our community deserves to enjoy fresh air both on land and when soaring amongst the clouds.

The community meeting at 3 pm at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium is a critical opportunity for all stakeholders to voice their concerns and stand against the rezoning proposal. Together, we can urge decision-makers to reconsider this expansion and prioritize the environmental and recreational integrity of our cherished area.
