The Issue

I live right in the area that will be impacted by the proposed rezoning for a data center development at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Cabin Field Road in Concord District, Campbell County. Residents like myself understand the pressing need to maintain the character and serenity of our neighborhoods.

Rezoning this area threatens the tranquility and the rural lifestyle we've cherished for so long. Data centers, while beneficial for technological advancement, can bring significant noise, light pollution, and increased traffic, severely disrupting the daily lives of residents. In addition, the construction and operation of a data center could strain local resources, such as water and electricity, leading to potential hikes in utility costs for residents.

According to research, data centers can consume up to 1-2% of the world's electricity, and such a facility in our backyard would significantly increase our community's carbon footprint. Transforming this land could result in environmental degradation, affecting local wildlife and green spaces that contribute to our community’s biodiversity and recreational space.

Furthermore, local infrastructure may not be equipped to handle the demands of such a significant development. Roads, such as the Richmond Highway, could face congestion issues, impacting safety and travel time for residents and emergency services.

The economic benefits of a data center must be weighed against the potential loss of local property values and the disruption of our community's way of life. Our district deserves thoughtful planning that accounts for both growth and community welfare.

We urge the local planning authorities to reconsider this rezoning proposal. Instead, let's focus on development that aligns with our community’s needs, values, and sustainable future.

Please join me in standing up for the preservation of our neighborhood by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that our voices are heard in this crucial decision-making process.
