The Issue

In the Town of Lumberland, we find ourselves grappling with an unwarranted restriction on development rights, particularly regarding our front yard areas. As a resident deeply invested in maintaining the autonomy over my land, I am profoundly concerned about this emerging regulation that hinders our ability to make personal decisions about property improvements.

Previously, the setback requirements ensured an equitable balance between private property rights and community aesthetics, fostering an environment where both homeowners and the township could coexist harmoniously. These requirements were sufficient in preserving the character of our neighborhoods while allowing homeowners the creativity and liberty to enhance their properties to suit their needs and preferences.

However, this new law constitutes an overreach into personal freedoms, stripping homeowners of their rights to decide how to utilize their land. For many in our community, our properties are more than just parcels of land; they are extensions of our personal and family identities, and to have restrictions placed on them feels unjust and intrusive.

Development restrictions not only stifle personal expression but also potentially diminish property value, impacting every resident's financial investment in their home. When a homeowner wishes to make aesthetic or functional changes, these are typically with the enhancement of the community in mind, improving curb appeal, and increasing neighborhood value.

Research shows that flexible, owner-friendly development policies are linked to increased property values and community satisfaction. According to the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, areas that respect property autonomy tend to thrive economically and socially, suggesting that these restrictive laws may, inadvertently, put Lumberland at a disadvantage.

This petition urges the Town Council of Lumberland to reconsider and repeal these burdensome restrictions. By doing so, they will be affirming their commitment to supporting the rights of property owners, respecting personal autonomy, and fostering a vibrant, engaged community.

We, the residents, stand united in our request for a balanced approach to property development that reflects our values and respects our rights. I invite you to join us in this crucial endeavor to protect our homes and neighborhoods from unnecessary government intrusion.

Please sign this petition to show your support for the repeal of restrictive development laws in the Town of Lumberland.
