 The "Emergency" Double Standard in Higher Ed 🚨

 Today’s class for ENG12A0 shifted to remote learning on Brightspace due to severe weather.

Let’s look at the bigger picture: weekend and evening classes (like mandatory in-person sessions running from 5 or 6 PM to 8 or 9 PM on weekdays) are supposedly marketed toward adult learners. But how can anyone expect students working Monday-to-Friday 9-to-5 jobs—or grinding through irregular hours—to battle rush hour and transit delays just to sit in a physical classroom?

 When weather forces a remote shift, everybody adapts because the learning happens seamlessly without the commuter stress. So if instruction can easily move online for an emergency, why are working adults penalized with rigid, mandatory in-person attendance the rest of the time?

 Core classes like ENG12A0 desperately need institutional flexibility—offering permanent online or hybrid (sync/async) options so adult learners aren't set up to fail.
