From Broken Barriers to Computer Lab Classrooms- Why We Need Academic Flexibility Now

Petition Update: The Absurdity of In-Person Mandates

We talk a lot about physical accessibility barriers on campus, but administrative barriers can be just as frustrating. Today, students in an in-person English composition course received notice that their classroom has been permanently switched to Room M-110, which is a fixed computer lab in the MAC building.

Let that sink in: students are being forced to commute to campus, navigate physical infrastructure, and adhere to rigid in-person attendance policies, only to sit at fixed desktop computers that could easily be accessed from home or through remote learning options.

When colleges enforce strict in-person mandates for classes that rely entirely on digital tools anyway, it doesn't improve education; it just creates unnecessary hurdles for adult learners, commuters, and students with mobility constraints.

This is exactly why we are fighting for mandatory online and hybrid options for core courses. Flexibility is a matter of basic equity and common sense.
