Stop Residential rat control subsidy pilot program - Region of Peel

The Issue

The Region of Peel’s rat control subsidy program does not have safe guards in place to prevent individuals from abusing the use of rodenticides and as a result is very detrimental to existing wildlife. Tax payers subsidize there cost up to 200 annually. Every small animal poisoned becomes a potential food source for other wildlife and pets. These bait boxes typically have an entrance hole of about 8 to 10 centimeters and anything that can fit in there has access to the poison bait. The animals die a horrific death. Other jurisdictions have programs that really focus on mitigation strategies first, by way of physical inspections of the actual situation and using these rodenticides only as a last resort. We don’t want to make is easy so that someone can lay these bait traps in our neighborhoods on a just in case basis or before not having taken the proper mitigations steps.
