Stop requiring students to ask for basic human rights
The issue
It is time for a change in how we perceive and enforce rules around students' basic human rights within educational institutions. Throughout my time as a student, I have been disheartened by the frequent need to ask permission for things that are inherently every person's right. This struggle is not just mine; it is an everyday obstacle faced by countless students across the globe and it impacts our well-being, dignity, and ability to receive an education without unnecessary burdens.
Imagine being in a classroom and needing to seek permission to access the bathroom or being restricted from doing so during stressful examination periods. These situations highlight a concerning reality where fundamental rights are overshadowed by outdated policies. According to UNESCO, education is a fundamental human right and a key aspect of personal and social development. Policies that force students to ask for basic rights create an environment that hinders their growth and mental health.
This petition aims to provoke a dialogue that encourages educational institutions to revise their policies. Schools should foster an environment that respects students' autonomy while maintaining necessary guidelines to ensure an effective learning environment. Simple solutions, such as clear guidelines about rights and responsibilities or implementing a rights-respecting school policy, could transform the student experience.
With your support, we can urge school administrations and educational policymakers to recognize and implement the necessary changes to stop this practice of needing permission for rights. Policies should be updated to genuinely reflect the rights every student deserves, free from undue hindrance and with respect upheld at every level of their education.
Let's stand together to ensure that students are empowered and respected. Your signature can make a significant impact in bringing attention to this critical issue and inspiring reform.
Please sign this petition to join us in this imperative movement for change. I would like this petition to reach 1,000 signatures by the end of 2026.
