Stop required dedicated account rules for how parents can spend childs SSI back pay on

The Issue

Parent's all over the country are forced to spend our children's SSI back pay on a limited list of items. The issue parents are finding is, that children who are diagnosed, and given SSI for autism do not have many ways to spend thier children's back pay. There are many mental diagnosed children who this issue may affect. Parents are getting in trouble, and having to pay back money they believe should have been okay to spend on their children.

With this laws change, parents can make any purchases for thier children regardless of what the item is. It will help families to not stress so much over what is okay to spend, or not. It will also allow those children already struggling be able to get everything thier parent known they need get faster.

This law has been long overdue for change. The current law came about May 22, of 2006, that's almost 2 decades ago. With autism being a newer issue, we need immediate change to help them succeed in life. The sooner parent's can get help for thier children, the easier it will be to guide them through life.

As a mother of a 6 year old who has autism, his disability isn't too physically impaired, rather more mentally. His needs aren't anything people can see. There are things I believe I should be able to buy for him with his back pay that the outdated law will not agree with. We as parents need to take a stand.

The SSA has limited workers, so it's taking longer for them to approve anyone. With this issue they, then have to give a significant amount of back pay which has to go into a dedicated account when the ssi recipient is under 18. When parents misuse the back pay unknowingly, they have to pay that amount back. The money they have to pay back does not go back to the childs back pay, it goes to the treasurey, which is not fair for the child. As I stated before this law was made in 2006, with no change.

I know this way of doing things is confusing for many parents like me, and with this petition we can help make things better. My hopes are for us to show the government, or SSA that we need a new way of doing things.
