Stop Refugees from being sent to Rwanda
The Issue
We request for the UK government and the UK home office to scrap the Rwanda deal and to internalize the asylum process. As Rwanda is a country that is still developing economically and is among the world's 25 poorest countries. According to Freedomhouse.org Rwanda scored 8 out of 40 in political rights and a 16 out of 30 in civil liberties. A country where its own citizens aren't free shouldn't be given the task to process Refugees and host refugees. Who have fled war and violence should be hosted in a country that can ensure their safety and give them a proper future. Offshoring refugees won't solve the issues but will worsen it. Australia attempted a similar deal with Papua New Guinea resulting in refugees living inhumane conditions and in self harm and suicides. Not only is the deal bad and unethical, it is also wasteful. As the deal will reportedly cost an initial 210 million pounds (€144.4 million, $157.6 million). Costing the UK taxpayer more money at a time where there is a cost of living crisis. There is no excuse for offshoring refugees. If the UK can set up various plans and schemes for Ukrainian refugees. Then why not also for refugees who risk their lives crossing the Channel. We also request for the government to scrap the Nationality and Borders Bill as the UNHCR has warned that the Bill undermines the 1951 Refugee Convention, an agreement which has protected refugees for decades and of which the UK is a signatory.
Finally we urge the UK government to remove these policies and remember its commitment to refugees. Seeking Asylum is a universal human right that needs to be protected !!
