The Issue

On September, 7th  at Stockbridge Middle School, my friend Alex was blamed for hitting another student first, even though he was defending himself. Instead of investigating the situation thoroughly, the school administration jumped to a conclusion influenced by racial bias. Alex is a caring and kind person who would never start a fight, and yet, due to systemic bias, he was labeled as the aggressor.

This incident is not an isolated one. Unfortunately, racial discrimination and bullying have been longstanding issues at Stockbridge Middle School. Several students have faced similar injustices, witnessing how prejudice breaks their spirits and erodes their trust in the educational system. A recent survey by the Human Rights Campaign found that 65% of students of color reported experiencing racial discrimination at school. These troubling statistics echo our experiences and highlight the urgent need for change.

It is crucial that Stockbridge Middle School acknowledges these systemic issues and takes decisive action to address them. We propose the following measures to combat racial discrimination and bullying:

1. Implement comprehensive racial bias and sensitivity training for all staff, including teachers, administrators, and support personnel.

2. Establish a clear, unbiased, and transparent process for investigating incidents of bullying and discrimination.

3. Create a student-led diversity and inclusion committee to promote cultural understanding and awareness within the school community.

4. Regularly review school policies and curriculum to ensure they promote equity and inclusivity.

5. Involve parents and community members in discussions and decision-making processes regarding these issues.

By enacting these changes, we strive to create a safer and more inclusive learning environment for every student at Stockbridge Middle School. Our children deserve to feel valued, respected, and supported, regardless of their racial or cultural background.

We urge the school administration to take immediate action in implementing these solutions. Your support is crucial to making a difference. Please sign this petition to demand accountability and promote a safer, more equitable future for our students.
