Stop Punishing Abandoned Cats: Demand City Funding for Humane TNR and Caretakers
The Issue
Every stray and feral cat living on our streets is there because of human error. They didn't ask to be abandoned, neglected, or thrown outside like trash. They are living, sentient creatures capable of feeling hunger, cold, pain, and fear—just like the pets in our homes.
Yet, instead of receiving compassion, community cats are treated as a nuisance. More than ever, they are being targeted, severely harmed, and inhumanely killed.
Currently, the entire burden of this crisis falls on independent caretakers and grassroots, non-profit rescue groups. These everyday heroes spend thousands of dollars out of their own pockets and sacrifice their time to manage colonies and perform TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). Meanwhile, our city provides zero financial help, leaving community members to fund a public crisis on their own.
Leaving a community-wide problem entirely on the shoulders of kind-hearted citizens is unsustainable and wrong. Human error created this crisis, and municipal accountability must fix it.
We, the undersigned, demand that our City Council and local officials immediately step up to:
• Allocate City Funding: Establish a dedicated municipal budget to fund local non-profit rescues and independent colony caretakers.
• Support Free TNR Services: Provide city-sponsored funding for low-cost or free spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and trap rentals.
• Protect Caretakers and Cats: Pass local ordinances that legally shield caretakers from fines or harassment and strictly enforce animal cruelty laws for outdoor cats.
Community cats are a part of our neighborhoods. They deserve to be protected, respected, and treated with basic human decency.
