The Issue

Barwood Park, Erskine, holds a profound personal significance for me and many others in our community. It’s not just a park, but a sanctuary that provides a vital, green recreational space for all.
As both a community member and a frequent visitor to this park, I have witnessed its indispensable role in the community,  providing a space  promoting well-being, healing, de-stressing, exercise, hobbies, family activities.

The council's proposal to build a high school, or any future potential developments on this land, threatens to erase our green space. Barwood Park serves as a much-needed refuge for families, children, dog-walkers, the young and old alike.
It is a designated public space where people converge for recreational activities, community events, and relaxation, blending the beauty of nature with our daily lives.

Green spaces like Barwood Park are critically important. A study by Public Health Scotland outlines the significant physical and mental health benefits associated with access to community parks. Regular exposure to nature has been linked to lowered stress levels, improved concentration, and overall enhanced quality of life. Additionally, Barwood Park serves as an important ecological habitat for local wildlife, helping to conserve our region’s biodiversity.

The removal of Barwood Park for development goes against sustainable urban planning principles. The loss of green space would not only reduce residents' quality of life but potentially contribute to increased pollution levels and urban heat island effects. According to Greenspace Scotland, urban green spaces contribute significantly to environmental health by filtering pollutants and moderating temperatures, mitigating the impact of climate change.

Instead of building on Barwood Park, I urge the Renfrewshire Council to explore alternative sites for development that do not impinge on our community’s valued green areas. Creative solutions such as utilizing existing under-used spaces in more developed areas or repurposing brownfield sites can be adopted.

The preservation of Barwood Park as an accessible green space is a matter of importance not only for our generation but for those to come. Together, we can ensure that our community continues to thrive in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Please sign this petition to protect Barwood Park and ensure it remains a green haven for current and future generations.
