Stop priority public transport changes in Hillsborough - Sheffield
The Issue
I am the proud owner of a local pet shop here in Sheffield, and like many other businesses in our area, we're facing difficult days ahead due to the proposed 'Making Public Transport (Trams & Buses) Work Better' scheme by Sheffield City Council. This proposal, although well-intentioned, will prioritize buses and trams over cars, transforming major roads into 'buses & trams only' zones. This drastic change threatens not only my livelihood but the livelihoods of countless other local businesses.
Our pet shop provides essential services and products to our community. Many of our customers rely on us for animal food and supplies that simply cannot be transported by bus or tram. We have regular deliveries of animal food, which need road access. Shutting down road access would cut off our supply chain and make it nearly impossible for our customers to transport bulky and heavy items like animal feed. These restrictions would severely impact the local economy.
Businesses such as local takeaways, salons, dog groomers, pubs, and countless shops are in a similar predicament. Our regular customers rely on the convenience that cars provide. This proposal doesn’t just limit vehicles on main roads — it could push traffic chaos onto smaller streets, creating further mayhem and congestion where families and pedestrians navigate their daily lives. How will local businesses survive if our access to customers and suppliers is severely restricted?
We understand the need for efficient public transport, but the proposed changes should not come at the cost of shutting down local businesses. Solutions like creating shared-use lanes, improving parking accessibility, or providing better transit alternatives should be considered. The council needs to engage deeply with business owners, residents, and commuters to understand the real-world implications and find a balanced approach that doesn't jeopardize our community's economic stability.
We call upon Sheffield City Council to rethink this plan and work collaboratively with us to create a transport strategy that supports both the environment and the economic well-being of our community. We can find a solution that benefits everyone, but we need to have an open dialogue and a willingness to act upon it.
Please sign this petition to support local businesses and demand a change to this proposed plan. Help us ensure that the future of Sheffield is one that sustains both its public transport system and local businesses!
