PLEASE SIGN THE STOP PRINCESS PETITION

There are reasonably-sized river cruise ships that hold around one to two hundred people. There is no issue with this scale in our small Yorktown harbor. It is the scale of the Princess Cruise ships that doesn’t make sense for Yorktown.

Historic Yorktown, the birthplace of America, is a small community that synergistically marries historic buildings, a community of about 250 residents, a small number of businesses, and our waterfront/beach visitors. There are scenic vistas of the bridge and sunsets that can be viewed over a river cove from near the Waterman’s Museum.

Against this backdrop these large ships and a potential plan to dock them weekly during tourist season at a pier at the Waterman’s Museum simply doesn’t make sense. Princess cruise ships carry about 2000 to 3600 passengers plus a large crew. These vessels are hundreds of feet high and can be more than 1000 feet long. They will tower over this small community if docked in Yorktown - altering the character of this unique and extraordinary historic town.

Some heights for comparison:

  • Island Princess: 204 feet
  • Coleman Bridge roadway: 90 feet
  • Nelson House: 43 feet
  • Yorktown Victory Monument: 94 feet

The Island Princess is also 964 feet long!

Preserve Yorktown is not anti-business. We fully support reasonably sized cruise lines like the American Eagle that frequents our harbor. These ships carry 109 passengers as opposed to the 3000 or more carried by Princess ships. Smaller cruise ships help create a symbiotic economic benefit to the community, while larger ship are a bad business decision that will alter the character of Yorktown.
