Texas A&M students and their families are a vital part of the College Station community. Our presence brings substantial economic benefits—we pay rent, support local hotels, frequent restaurants, and shop at businesses. We are a part of this community, especially during events like games, graduations, move-in weekends, and Ring Days.

Yet, despite this significant contribution, we repeatedly face a troubling issue: predatory towing. Many students and their families have been affected by aggressive and unjust towing practices, predominantly targeting our vehicles in apartment complexes and restaurants  around College Station. This has led not only to financial inconvenience but also to undue stress and frustration.

It’s time for change. We propose a clear set of guidelines and regulations be established to protect students and visitors from these predatory tactics. Local authorities need to implement measures for transparency in towing practices, such as clear signage indicating legal parking areas and fair warning before towing a vehicle.

Additionally, there must be better oversight and stricter enforcement of towing policies to prevent abuse. Establishing a hotline for reporting and resolving towing disputes would further empower students and visitors, ensuring that our rights are protected.

Numerous stories from fellow students highlight the urgency of this issue. In one instance, a student parked overnight in a complex visitor spot, only to be towed within hours. The financial burden of retrieving the vehicle was immense and unnecessary.
