In todays world there has been a fight over ownership, this decision by PlayStation to stop selling new games on disc by 2028, opting instead for a digital-only model, feels like the final blow to this method. This isn't just about how we purchase and play our games, it's about the preservation of our ownership of them.

I grew up with having the excitement of visiting a game store, feeling the weight of a new game disc in my hands, having the manual , the extras and being able to add it to my shelf collection. A Physical copy represents as well memories and experiences we had. If this move by PlayStation goes through, thousands of gamers like me will lose the satisfaction and personal connection that comes with owning a physical copy.

This transition to a digital-only model seems to be a decision more focused in profit making than in player satisfaction.  With the existence of physical games , it  enabled trade-ins, second-hand sales, and the ability to even lend games to our friends. Digital-only policies eliminate all these aspects, leaving players tethered to a specific platform or account, making it difficult to share or sell their games and being obligated to their store prices without no return of it.

When you buy a physical game, you truly own it, no one can take it from you. But with the digital purchases, you're simply just buying the right to access that content they are selling. Many games were already taken of our hands from the store and this undermines our ability to maintain rights to our purchases, as digital libraries can be rendered inaccessible as well if accounts are compromised or platforms change their terms of service. Such changes can strip away access to our OWN games we have bought.

This isn't just about holding onto nostalgia, or having a disc to look at , it's about preserving our rights . We need to send a strong message to PlayStation that gamers value the ownership of the content they bought. It's essential for companies to remember that their profitability is not more important than a satisfied customer base, and doing this to their loyal customers is not the way forward.
