Stop plastic waste: West Lakes Academy

Blue Planet II has allowed us to witness our impact on the oceans and marine life, and has acted as inspiration for this petiton. Our seas are home to fascinating life, but we are poisoning them through our laziness and waste. Plastic litter has been a particular focus in the series, for example it was attributed to the death of a whale calf. The mother carried its deceased child's corpse for a week in mourning.
There are many simple changes that can happen to help prevent such incidents. West Lakes Academy does not currently have plastic recycling bins in the refectory, and so no plastic packaging is recycled which has been a concern of students. We are calling on West Lakes Academy to do more to reduce the harm we are causing to our planet.
We want and are calling for:
- A reduction in the amount of plastic packaging used for food, and the elimination of any non-recyclable plastic that may be used.
- A reduction in the amount of plastic cutlery used.
- The removal of disposable cups by encouraging pupils and staff to bring in their own reusable cups and flasks.
- Introduce recycling bins for any plastic packaging.
Our everyday choices add up, and we all carry responsibility in making choices which will aid our planet.
'Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we have a responsibility to care for our blue planet.' - Sir David Attenborough
