Stop PetSmart from mistreating reptiles/aquatics-Stop Selling Live Animals
The Issue
Hello there. We are two students from BC, Canada creating a project to bring to your attention the horrible mistreatment of live animals at PetSmart, a large corporation which you yourself may shop from; in an attempt stop PetSmart from selling live animals.
PetSmart is a large corporation both in America and Canada that makes 7 billion dollars annually. Only 3% of this comes from live animal sales. Explaining, why they make such little effort to keep them in the proper conditions.
Let's start from the beginning. An undercover study conducted by PETA revealed that in 2016, PetSmart sourced their animals predominantly from a farm in Pennsylvania- Holms farm- that was essentially the rodent equivalent of a puppy mill. "One hamster who had been attacked by a cat was just left to flail and die on the floor," said the group that performed the study. Most of the animals were either diseased or dead. To learn more, read this study here: https://www.thedodo.com/petco-petsmart-pet-supplier-abuse-1563393540.html
There is no evidence that PetSmart no longer gets their live animals from Holms' farm.
When sick or injured animals are returned to PetSmart, they are often sent back to Holms Farm, where they are left to die.
Additionally, let's discuss how PetSmart keeps their reptiles and fish. Not only do they provide false information on their website about space requirements, but they demonstrate the wrong care. Ball pythons are kept in small 20-gallon enclosures, with only a half log on aspen to survive. Aspen is a horrible substrate to use for ball pythons as they require at least 70-80% humidity, despite the website stating they need only 50% humidity. The same goes for their care of aquatic animals. The betas are kept in small containers, and staff spread false information about the size of the tank they need to thrive. Staff are untrained in the live animal's care, telling potential buyers just what they want to hear in order to make a sale.

Due to the miseducation, pets are often surrendered to the wild, creating an overpopulation of invasive species in local parks.
Please Sign this petition if you agree that PetSmart needs to claim responsibility for the death of millions of animals and that they need to stop selling them.
