The Issue

Rugby League is a beloved sport, cherished by passionate fans in the UK and beyond, yet at the heart of its governance, the Rugby Football League (RFL) is tarnishing its reputation. The core of this issue stems from the apparent mismanagement and questionable decisions spearheaded by its leader, Nigel Wood. Recently, the decision to increase the number of teams in the Super League from 12 to 14 was made in undue haste. This decision risks derailing the potential partnership with the National Rugby League (NRL) which could greatly enhance our sport in the UK.

The Super League's expansion decision seems not to fully integrate the strategic grading system proposed by IMG, a system designed to try and ensure long-term success, growth and at least sustainability. This puts the future of Rugby League in self-interested hands, compromising the integrity of competition and alienating fans. The stakeholders, especially the fans, have voiced their discontent at being sidelined in decisions that affect the future of the sport they deeply care about.

Statistics from reputable sources indicate that rushed expansions and decisions driven by a singular agenda often lead to long-term issues that can detrimentally affect any sport's future.

Fans want to see the Super League prosper, but not at the cost of prudence, integrity, and a well-thought-out strategic plan that considers all influences and stakeholders.

It's imperative to demand accountability and transparency from those in power at the RFL. Nigel Wood has been allowed to continuously act in ways that do not prioritise the sport as a whole or its loyal followers. His leadership has been called into question by the fans whose voices are vital to the sport's vibrancy and longevity. It is time for a change.

It's crucial for the future of Rugby League in the UK that leadership decisions are made with consideration for the sport's real stakeholders. Openness to NRL involvement and listening to the what the fans and players want are critical steps toward this goal. Sign this petition to call for an end to the perceived mismanagement under Nigel Wood's leadership and to demand a future where Rugby League can thrive with players consulted, clear, fan-centered and ethical governance.
