Stop paws animal sanctuary for killing anymore animals

The Issue

Calling for more laws and legislations around rehoming dogs and other animals. There are currently no laws around who can open a sanctuary and how it should be run. We need more people to be aware of Tuks Law. Max's chip is still in our name to this day, meaning the vet that put max and Bert to sleep never even checked their chips.

Max was a dog we rescued from an abusive home, we intended to find him a new home from the start as he didn't like other dogs and we have 2 at home. We found paws sanctuary in Worthing and got in contact with both Stacey McSpirit and Denise (Dee) Sandell. They advertise themselves as a sanctuary that rehabilitates and then rehomes dogs when ready. Was told they have helped hundreds of dogs find their forever homes. Told them max guards his food and toys, doesn't like other dogs and had no experience with children. They promised to give him training. We told them multiple times if there was any problems we would take him back right away. Next day asked for an update and was told he was in a new home not even 24hours later and Dee said he was like a different dog. No training or assessments on max. No home check on the new owner. Max was chipped to us and it wasnt changed. We asked for months and was mostly ignored. 9 months later the chip still hasn't been changed despite allegedly being in a new home for months at this point. Rang the sanctuary and spoke to Stacey and she said " he was one of the dogs we had to put down". They put max down who was under a year old knowing we would always take him. We rang Dee to confirm what happened to Max, she had told us he had been in a home for months and he had bitten a child so he had to be put to sleep. we would like to know why he wasn't given training like promised? why was there no home checks? why was there no proof of life for months after we continued to ask? why was his chip never changed? Dee and Stacey are now not replying to meesages again. Dee has threathen us with the police and have told us mulitple times we failed max and it's our fault. We rescued max from a top floor flat for an abusive owner who intended to have max put to sleep and we handed him to a sanctuary. Not for one minute did we think they'd have him put to sleep and now they're blaming us. Max was left with Denise Sandell at her home in Lancing. Max's chip has still not been changed to this day despite being in dees care since April.

Just like Max, a lurcher previously named horse now Bert was handed to Dee. She had him for less than 24 hours before handing him over to a lady for foster. There was no home check, no assessment on the dog again. Fosterer was never told about any behavior problems. 1 week later he was adopted, the family had him for 8 days. They explained his behaviour and said that he would benefit from some training. Dee ignored this. Bert was then returned to the fosterer. Not returned to Dee for training but a random stranger that Dee doesn't know and hasn't given a home check too. Bert went to 4 different homes in 5 months whilst in the care of Dee and paws animal sanctuary. After fostering Bert for 5 months she returned him to Dee. In those 5 months nobody came to see Bert or his home. The fosterer had no support with training as promised. She was also struggling to communicate with both Dee and Stacey. The fosterer told them she would have him back if they could help with training. There had been no contact with the fosterer for nearly three weeks after she left him with Dee, until the 7th February 2023 when Dee had messaged the fosterer saying she had gotten Bert put to sleep because he had bitten her. We was both told by Stacey (the lady that runs the sanctuary) that Dee is the best dog trainer she knows. If that is true why is she putting these dogs down rather than giving them training. If that was true why didn't Dee help the fosterer to train Bert like she had asked multiple times in the past 5 months.

We're concerned with the abilty they actually have to re-home these animals as 8 dogs were advertised on Facebook last year by Dee and Stacey but not one of them had a real comment of interest. We are concerned Dee doesn't check the people she gives dogs to and then when they are returned to her because they're untrained they become a burden so she gets them put to sleep. We hope this isn't the case but 2 dogs that had loving back up homes have been put to sleep in a very short space of time.

Multiple people have also come forward to say they no longer believe Stacey is mentally and physically well enough to manage the sanctuary.

They promised to rehabilitate but it seems like they're just putting the dogs to sleep. We dont want this happening to more animals.
