As Gainesville prepares to welcome ParkGVL, concerns are already emerging about the new pay-to-park system and how it’s being communicated to the public. Current signage states that visitors who scan a QR code and check in will receive two hours of free parking. However, what the sign does not clearly explain is that this benefit is limited to one use per day. This means if someone visits the square in the morning for coffee, a walk, or time with friends, and then returns later that same day for dinner or family activities, they will no longer qualify for the free parking period. Instead, they will be charged $4 per hour on their second visit. Without that key detail clearly stated, many visitors will reasonably assume that each visit includes two free hours, making the signage misleading and setting the stage for confusion and frustration. For a space designed to bring the community together, policies like this risk doing the opposite by discouraging repeat visits and limiting how families can enjoy the square throughout the day. Take action now: Sign the petition and share it with your friends and family to ensure the Gainesville City Council is aware of this issue before ParkGVL is fully implemented. Our community deserves clear communication and fair access to public spaces.
