The Issue

I grew up in Churchdown, a lovely village nestled between Gloucester and Cheltenham. It was a place where the community thrived amid expansive green fields and a tapestry of wildlife. But today, that cherished image is fading. The heart of our village is under threat as 675 houses are set to be built on our precious farmland.

This influx of developments has placed a tremendous strain on Churchdown's infrastructure. Our roads, once conducive for smooth rides, are now plagued by massive traffic build-ups. Commutes that should take minutes are now lengthy ordeals, stretching our patience and fraying community bonds. Is this the legacy we wish to pass on?

The most severe impact, however, lies in the environmental cost. These farmlands were not just plots of earth; they were lifelines for local wildlife. Birds, hedgehogs, foxes, and other native species thrived here. With each acre of land consumed by construction, another habitat is destroyed. Our land is as much theirs as it is ours.

Consider the future. Churchdown’s charm lies in its green spaces, and these should remain intact as a testament to the harmonious balance between urban development and nature. Instead of expanding concrete horizons, we should invest in smarter, community-based planning. Alternatives like redeveloping existing properties, revitalising abandoned buildings, or building upward rather than outward could accommodate growth without sacrificing our countryside.

Please join me in urging local authorities and developers to reconsider their plans. Let us protect Churchdown’s landscape, maintain our quality of life, and preserve our natural habitat. Let us stand united in maintaining our village’s integrity for future generations to enjoy.

Sign the petition to stop the overdevelopment of Churchdown and preserve its rich heritage for tomorrow.
