Dear Neighbors,

I’m so excited to share that we are up to 991 signatures as of today! We need just nine more to reach our goal of 1,000 by Tuesday!

Some perturbing news… many people received a deceptive and misleading text in favor of the current Melville redevelopment proposals — but it was actually not from the Dems! It also misleads people into thinking the proposals will create a “walkable downtown” in Melville.

A “walkable downtown” in Melville may be a good idea, but there is nothing in the proposals requiring this town center to be built. Instead, the proposals create a zoning changes allowing developers to add thousands of apartments — four-story, high density apartment projects. The “walkable downtown” is a mirage!

Melville is an important site for the replenishment of our groundwater (which was why it was initially zoned for low density daytime use) — and now they want to add more pavement and thousands of apartments.

This is effectively the biggest residential zone change in Long Island history — with no master plan, with zero assessments of impacts on our aquifer, traffic patterns, schools, economic impacts, etc… and certainly no “walkable downtown”!

If housing is to be built in this aquifer-sensitive area — next to the already overburdened Route 110 — it needs to be properly planned by a professional planning firm, not town officials in back rooms.

So please keep speaking up — we deserve a voice and a PLAN!

Come to the final public hearing on these proposals at Town Hall Tuesday June 11, 7pm — where we will present our petition to the Town Board. If you want to speak, arrive by 6pm to sign up.

If you can’t attend, please write to the Board at melvilleredevelopment@huntingtonny.gov and share our petition!

With gratitude for your support,

Kat
