The Issue

⛰️Quarrying is the process of extracting gravel, sand, and stones from mountains and rivers to supply construction projects. In the Philippines, it is a legal industry, but in Rodriguez (Montalban)📍, Rizal, the operations have gone beyond safe limits.

For decades, Montalban has been a major supplier of gravel and sand for Metro Manila. But over-quarrying has caused serious damage to the environment and community❗:

  • Deforestation 🌳 – Large areas of Sierra Madre are cleared, removing the trees that protect us from floods and landslides.
  • Destruction of Sierra Madre ⛰️ – Our mountains, known as the “backbone of Luzon,” are being flattened and weakened.
  • Landslides and Erosion ⚠️ – Without trees to hold the soil, heavy rains trigger landslides that endanger nearby residents.
  • Flooding and Drainage Problems ⛈️ – Quarry waste clogs rivers and canals, worsening floods during typhoons.
  • Air and Water Pollution 💧 – Dust from quarry sites causes cough, asthma, and health issues, while rivers become dirty and unsafe.
  • Road Damage and Traffic 🚦– Heavy quarry trucks destroy roads, create deep holes, and cause daily traffic.
  • Noise and Waste 🗑️ – Blasting and hauling disturb communities, while waste materials harm the environment.

THE TRUTH FROM STUDIES AND REPORTS 📝👨🏻‍🔬:

After Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, quarrying was suspended for a time. Yet the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) reported that almost 80% of the 180 hectares being quarried were government-approved🤓. A study by Roosevelt College Marikina found that 76% of farmers in nearby areas complained about dust, pollution, and reduced crop productivity caused by quarrying📊.

TYPHOON ULYSSES: A PAINFUL LESSON ⛈️📒:

In November 2020, Typhoon Ulysses⛈️ brought massive flooding to Rodriguez. Entire communities were submerged, and families lost homes and loved ones. While the typhoon was natural, experts and residents pointed out that over-quarrying made it worse. With mountains flattened and forests gone, there were no barriers left to slow down floodwaters. What should have been natural protection became a pathway for disaster☹️.

WHY WE MUST ACT NOW🤔?

Quarrying may provide construction materials, but it destroys our environment and safety. If left uncontrolled😣:

  • More floods like Typhoon Ulysses will happen⛈️.
  • Sierra Madre, our strongest shield against typhoons, will continue to weaken⛰️.
  • Air, water, and roads in Rodriguez will get worse👥.

BUT IF QUARRYING IS STOPPED OR STRICTLY REGULATED 🚫✋🏻:

  • The mountains can recover, bringing back natural beauty and eco-tourism⛰️.
  • Reforestation can reduce landslides, floods, and global warming🌳.
  • Cleaner water and air will improve health🩺.
  • Roads will last longer without daily damage from quarry trucks🛣️.

SOLUTIONS AND ALTERNATIVES 🤓✅:

  1. Stop or strictly regulate quarrying in Rodriguez, Rizal🚫.
  2.  Enforce reforestation in damaged areas to bring back Sierra Madre’s protection🌳.
  3. Repair rivers and drainage systems to prevent flooding🛠️.
  4. Promote eco-friendly construction materials like eco-bricks and recycled plastics♻️.
  5. Put community safety first before the profit of quarrying companies👥.

•CALL TO ACTION 📢❗:

Rodriguez, Rizal should not have to sacrifice its people and mountains for Metro Manila’s construction needs. Our mountains are not just resources they are life, protection, and home.

We call on the government and concerned agencies to stop over-quarrying, restore Sierra Madre, and protect the people of Rodriguez.
