Stop out-of-towners from taking over Albany, Georgia
The Issue
I was born and raised in Albany, Georgia, a tight-knit community that has always stood by its residents. We've seen our city face challenges, and together we've overcome them. But today, the heart of Albany is at risk. Our community is changing rapidly as people from outside Albany move in, taking jobs and housing opportunities that should prioritize locals who have been the backbone of this city. The essence of Albany, our history, and our culture are being overshadowed by this influx.
The love I have for my hometown is deeply rooted, as is the love of many locals who have lived here all their lives. We’ve invested in our schools, our community events, and small businesses. Yet, we are now watching Albany evolve into something we barely recognize. It's not simply about outsiders moving in—it's about fairness and protecting the opportunities for the people who call this place home.
The economic opportunities available in Albany should first be accessible to people born, raised, and educated here. There's nothing wrong with welcoming newcomers, but they should not be prioritized over those who have supported Albany throughout their lives. Our community deserves the right to benefit from local growth and prosperity.
To address this, we propose developing a city council initiative that creates programs focusing on hiring and housing locals. For instance, implementing incentives for businesses that prioritize hiring local residents would ensure that the people of Albany remain central to our community’s economic development. Moreover, creating affordable housing programs that first cater to residents with longstanding ties to Albany would ensure that they aren't priced out of their own neighborhoods.
Albany has thrived on the strength and unity of its people for generations. Let's continue to support those who have made this place thrive. By making sure locals are prioritized in job opportunities and housing, we can maintain the soul of our city while fostering a community that welcomes newcomers, too.
I urge you to sign this petition and help preserve Albany for those who know and love it the most. Stand with me and protect the future of our city. With enough support, we can initiate a conversation with local leaders to make these changes a reality. Please sign and share this petition to keep Albany’s heart alive.
