Protect Children from Exposure to Explicit Content on Instagram

Instagram is rated as a 13+ app, yet sexually suggestive posts are regularly promoted through public accounts, hashtags, and the platform’s algorithm.

This type of content often violates Instagram’s own community guidelines, which prohibit nudity and sexual activity. However, enforcement remains inconsistent. Despite numerous reports, accounts that promote sexually explicit material are rarely removed, allowing a continuous stream of content that is inappropriate for young audiences.

A disturbing trend has also emerged where creators highlight their age—particularly noting when they have “just turned 18”—to market themselves. This tactic intentionally draws attention from users with a preference for underage or barely legal content, creating a dangerous space that can indirectly enable predatory behavior.

Additionally, the widespread promotion and glamorization of sex work on public platforms has normalized adult content for younger users, particularly teen girls. Many now believe that joining sites like OnlyFans is a quick path to success. However, data shows that the vast majority of creators earn very little—less than $1,000 a month for over 90% of users—while potentially sacrificing long-term goals like education and career development.

The consequences of this shift are serious. Pornography addiction is on the rise, and sexual harassment—especially in everyday environments like gyms and public spaces—continues to be a major issue. What once were normal clothing choices, such as school uniforms or swimwear, are now heavily sexualized, often influenced by trends in adult content. Cultural clothing, including religious garments like the hijab, have also been fetishized for profit, which is both offensive and deeply disrespectful.
