The Issue

Oklahoma’s students deserve an honest, fact-based education — not a curriculum built on conspiracy theories.

Yet State Superintendent Ryan Walters is pushing new K–12 social studies standards that include false claims about the 2020 presidential election and COVID-19.

These standards were not properly reviewed and were rejected by many parents, educators, and even members of the Oklahoma Legislature. Despite widespread concern, Walters has moved forward anyway.

Thankfully, the Oklahoma Supreme Court has temporarily blocked these standards while a lawsuit works its way through the courts. But we cannot be complacent. The push to politicize our classrooms and rewrite history is still underway — and our children’s education is on the line.

These proposed standards don’t just distort recent history. They also undermine trust in democratic institutions, spread anti-science misinformation, and limit students’ ability to think critically. That’s not education — it’s indoctrination.

We call on the Oklahoma State Board of Education and Superintendent Walters to permanently withdraw these proposed standards and commit to a transparent, expert-led revision process rooted in factual accuracy and broad public input.

If Superintendent Walters refuses, we urge the State Legislature to act decisively to reject these standards once and for all.

Oklahoma students deserve better than political propaganda in their classrooms. They deserve to learn the full truth — about elections, about public health, and about American democracy — without fear, spin, or manipulation.

History belongs to the people, not to politicians. And classrooms should be places of learning, not battlegrounds for ideology.
