Last year, the White House proposed the expansion of offshore drilling in the United States. While this plan’s progress is currently slowed, it is still necessary to get the facts out. A new analysis reports that this expansion would dramatically increase U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and risk more large oil spills, which could result in an environmental disaster. If put into practice, it would lead to 7X more carbon pollution than the U.S. emits annually, equal to the yearly emissions from nearly 10 billion cars (9X as many as are on the road worldwide today). Plus, the plan’s own numbers indicate it could result in spills of tens of millions of gallons of oil—equivalent to more than 3.5 Exxon Valdez spills.
