The Issue

If you haven’t heard yet, Ocean City has proposed a sports complex to be built on land that is directly adjacent to our farm, within walking distance of the stand. We want to bring awareness to this situation & explain to the public how exactly this will affect us.

The property that they are planning to move forward with purchasing has been farmed by my great-aunt’s family for well over 70 years. While it is true that they do NOT own this property, it is still directly next to their home farm.

If this sports complex project were to move forward, not only would it take hundred of acres of farmland out of production, but it would dramatically increase the amount of traffic that our small area of St. Martins would be forced to accommodate. This particular area is well used to move agricultural equipment from farm to farm, especially during planting & harvest seasons. The dramatic increase in traffic would make moving farm equipment on roadways more dangerous than it already is.

Nationally, the U.S. loses between 1.5 million and 2 million acres of total agricultural land each year through urban sprawl and commercial real estate conversion. We don’t want to become part of this statistic. We value our way of life here & we feel that if this is something Ocean City wishes to pursue, that they need to do it in town limits & not in our neighborhood. In no way are we against children playing sports or having a place to do so, we just feel there are better locations within this county to benefit everyone.

If you share these same concerns with us we ask that you please, please contact your county commissioners, legislative representatives, & if given the opportunity to attend meetings, voice your concerns, & speak on this topic in any way to support us in this situation.
