North Carolina just passed a law that bans students from having their phones on during class. On paper, it sounds like a way to reduce distractions. In reality, it cuts off students from their families, ignores health and safety needs, and takes control away from the teachers who manage their classrooms every day.

This one-size-fits-all law puts kids at risk. What about students who rely on their phones to manage diabetes or other medical conditions? What about parents trying to reach their children during an emergency? What about families going through difficult times who need that line of communication open?

And let’s not forget the educators. Many teachers already have strong policies that work. They know their classrooms and their students better than lawmakers do.

We’re not asking for chaos in the classroom. We’re asking for compassion, flexibility, and trust in the people closest to our kids. Phones are not just screens—they're lifelines.
