Stop Nordic from building a data center in Augusta, WI
The Issue
Augusta, WI, is more than just a dot on the map. For my family, it is home. A place filled with memories, community bonds, rolling landscapes, and natural beauty. Yet, this cherished lifestyle is under threat. Nordic is proposing to introduce data pods or a data center in Augusta, a move that could drastically alter our small-town charm and infringe upon our environment.
We live in an area where agriculture is the backbone of the community, and our family farms have sustained us for generations. The construction and operation of a data center bring significant risks: water usage, energy consumption, and disruption to the surrounding areas. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, data centers are responsible for 2% of the national electricity consumption, and this number is projected to grow. In Wisconsin, our resources should be used mindfully and sustain our agricultural practices, not diverted to power data centers.
The environmental impact of such a project is also alarming. Data centers can lead to habitat destruction, increased noise, and air pollution from construction and operation. The surrounding wildlife, which includes native bird species and other fauna, stands to lose its natural habitat. Wildlife Conservation Society reports that disruptions in small-town ecosystems can lead to irreversible damage to local species diversity.
We need to think carefully about the long-term effects on our community. An influx of unknown workers and increased industrial traffic disrupts our quiet, rural life, elevates crime rates, and creates noise pollution that can drown out the serenity of Augusta's nights.
Let's prioritize clean water and air, preserve our forests and wildlands, and ensure that our children inherit a healthy, thriving environment. Our city’s charm and precious resources should remain untouched by the high-tech industry’s expansion. I urge you, our fellow Augstians, and supporters globally, to stand with us.
Please sign this petition to stop Nordic from building data pods or a data center in Augusta. Together, we can protect our home from unnecessary industrial encroachment and commit to a future that values our natural heritage over corporate profits.
