The Issue

Every day, Salve Regina students struggle to find parking on their own campus. With more students than available parking spaces, many are left with nowhere reasonable to park — only to face $50–$60+ fines.

Students are already burdened by rising tuition, student loans, and living expenses. Being penalized for parking when no emergency lanes are blocked or safety hazards created is an unfair financial strain.

Meanwhile, Newport continues to welcome tourists who contribute to the city's economy, while the students who live, study, and contribute to this community year-round are left fighting for parking. These tourists continuously park on Salve’s campus, sometimes even going unnoticed in our own student lots.

We are calling on the City of Newport and Salve Regina University to:

Expand accessible student parking.
Reserve designated spaces for students.
Reevaluate enforcement policies and reduce excessive fines when parking does not create a safety hazard.

Students should not be punished for a shortage of parking they did not create.

Sign this petition to demand fairer parking policies, fewer unnecessary fines, and a campus that prioritizes the students who call it home.
