The Issue

As a full-time artist residing in the vibrant community of Orleans Parish, LA, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles and triumphs that come with pursuing a creative career. Art is not just a profession—it’s a passion, a livelihood, and a fundamental part of the cultural tapestry of our community. However, the introduction of new taxes specifically targeting local artists threatens to undermine this vital way of life.

Orleans Parish has long been a haven for artists, serving as a nurturing ground where creativity flourishes, and diverse artistic expressions are celebrated. The proposed taxation policy would impose an additional financial burden on artists, many of whom are already navigating the challenges of an unstable income. This new tax could discourage emerging talent and, ultimately, deter the growth of our community’s rich artistic landscape.

It's important to note that artists often contribute significantly to the local economy through various art-related events, festivals, and exhibitions that attract tourists and locals alike. According to a report by Americans for the Arts, the arts and culture sector is a $878 billion industry in the United States, employing 5.1 million people. In Orleans Parish alone, this sector has been pivotal in driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life. Imposing additional taxes threatens to stifle these contributions.

Instead of introducing new taxation, we should focus on policies that support and empower artists, such as grants for emerging artists, tax incentives for gallery owners, and investment in community art programs. These initiatives not only bolster the well-being of artists but also enrich our community, making it more vibrant and culturally dynamic.

I am deeply passionate about supporting fellow artists and ensuring that Orleans Parish remains a sanctuary for creatives to thrive. By signing this petition, you will stand in solidarity with the artist community, advocating for policies that protect and promote the arts rather than hinder them. Please lend your support and sign this petition to stop new taxes on local artists in Orleans Parish. Together, we can foster a nurturing environment where art continues to inspire and captivate the hearts of many.
